David Ayer Believes Jared Leto’s Joker Couldn’t Show Its Full Potential

Fans have mixed feelings about Jared Leto’s Joker, but director David Ayer believes we didn’t see the best of it.

‘Suicide Squad’ director David Ayer recently spoke up to defend Jared Leto’s performance as Joker.

In a now-deleted tweet, Ayer claimed that fans did not get to see the actor’s full potential on screen. Fandomwire reports that the director wrote:

“Shame you never had the chance to see Jared’s actual performance. It’s amazing. Sorry, not sorry.”

Zack Snyder Was the One Who Stirred the Pot

Snyder tweeted a photo of Leto’s Joker to celebrate the 3rd anniversary of the Snyder Cut of ‘Justice League.’ The post did not receive the warm welcome Snyder might have hoped for. Some fans wrote that they hate this version of the Joker. Others even called it a ‘monstrosity’:

“No matter how hard we try, we can’t escape that monstrosity.”

Another wrote:

“The worst live-action Joker in the history of Jokers.”

Leto’s Joker Disappointed Fans

Fans have mixed thoughts about Leto’s Joker since his appearance in ‘Suicide Squad’ and Snyder’s ‘Justice League.’ Some felt pretty excited after hearing the classic Batman comics like ‘The Killing Joke’ and ‘The Dark Knight Returns’ inspired the character. However, many of them now feel that DCEU’s Joker wasn’t what they hoped.

Still, Leto did a lot of work before his Joker role. He looked into different sources to make his version stand out. The version that ended up in theaters wasn’t what Ayer and Leto planned. The actor told IGN in 2017:

“Were there any that didn’t get cut? I’m asking you, were there any that didn’t get cut? There were so many scenes that got cut from the movie, I couldn’t even start. I think that the Joker… we did a lot of experimentation on the set, we explored a lot. There’s so much that we shot that’s not in the film. If I die anytime soon, it’s probably likely that it’ll surface somewhere. That’s the good news about the death of an actor is all that stuff seems to come out.”

So, it seems this is why Ayer believes it could’ve been different if the studio didn’t change their vision.
