Sydney Sweeney Confirms Barbarella Reboot Still Happening With Her Taking Jane Fonda’s Place

Sweeney talked about the ‘Barbarella’ movie reboot in a recent chat with Josh Horowitz.

Sony Pictures announced in 2022 that Sydney Sweeney would both star in and produce a new ‘Barbarella’ movie. But news about the project went quiet after that.

The ‘Happy Sad Confused’ host asked Sweeney in a recent interview if the reboot was still happening. She confirmed:

“It is. It’s so campy. I mean, Barbarella is just such a fun character to explore. She really just embraces her femininity and her sexuality, and I love that. She uses sex as a weapon, and I think it’s just such an interesting way into a sci-fi world, and I’ve always wanted to do sci-fi, so, we’ll see what happens.”

The Project’s Possible Director

Deadline mentioned that no writer or director was attached to the ‘Barbarella’ reboot a couple of years ago. Then, rumors started that Edgar Wright might direct the film.

Sweeney did not confirm or deny these rumors when Horowitz asked about it. Instead, she just kept silent and took a sip of water.

Jane Fonda Isn’t Happy About The Remake

The remake lacks production details so far. It also does not have a release date yet, but the original ‘Barbarella’ actress already has worries about the film.

The Hollywood Reporter got Jane Fonda’s thoughts on the new project last year:

“I try not to [think about it]. Because I worry about what it’s going to be.”

The Original Lead’s Ideas

The 1968 movie was adapted from a French comic book series. It showed Barbarella in her mission to stop an evil scientist named Durand Durand from using a weapon called the Positronic Ray.

Fonda had her own ideas for the film but explained:

“I had an idea of how to do it that [original producer] Dino De Laurentiis, when he was still alive, wouldn’t listen to. But it could have been a truly feminist movie.”
