Avengers Directors Claim MCU Fails Because Of ‘Generational Differences’

Russo brothers say that Marvel’s recent film flops aren’t about superhero fatigue.

Joe and Anthony Russo reveal why they think Marvel movies were struggling lately.

Last year wasn’t great for Marvel. Their ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania’ and ‘The Marvels’ weren’t doing well. But according to the Russos, the problem isn’t that people are tired of superheroes. It’s because of how different generations like to watch movies:

“There’s a big generational divide about how you consume media. There’s a generation that’s used to appointment viewing and going to a theater on a certain date to see something, but it’s aging out. Meanwhile the new generation are ‘I want it now, I want to process it now,’ then moving onto the next thing, which they process whilst doing two other things at the same time. You know, it’s a very different moment in time than it’s ever been. And so I think everyone, including Marvel, is experiencing the same thing, this transition. And I think that really is probably what’s at play more than anything else.”

Joe Russo says that Gen Z likes quick videos or posts that they only need a few seconds to consume. He thinks movies are changing because the usual way of making a two-hour movie feels old to them.

His Brother Agrees With Him

Anthony Russo tells GameRadar+ that complaining about superhero movies isn’t just about superheroes. People used to get tired of western movies long ago, and he believes it’s a cycle. He says superhero movies might just be going through a similar phase:

“The superhero fatigue question was around long before the work we were doing. So, it’s sort of an eternal complaint, like we always used to cite this back in our early days with superhero work. People used to complain about westerns in the same way but they lasted for decades and decades and decades. They were continually reinvented and brought to new heights as they went on.”

Paul Dano thinks this could be a chance for new stories to emerge. Joseph Quinn isn’t worried about superhero fatigue, though. He’s excited about ‘Fantastic Four’ because he thinks it’s going to be different.
