Kevin Costner Makes Movies For Men But Has ’Strong Women’ Characters Rule

Costner says the female characters ‘drive the story’ in his new film series.

Kevin Costner and the rest of ‘Horizon: An American Saga’ cast sat down for a new interview with the ‘Happy Sad Confused’ podcast. Costner shared details about directing the four-film franchise and said his focus was on strong women. His words read:

“I make movies for men. That’s what I do. But I won’t make a movie unless I have strong women characters. That’s how I’ve conducted my career. I think that’s why I have a good following. I thank you women for dragging your men here. It was a Western after all. I just can’t conceive of a movie without having [strong women].”

Women Perspective Is Crucial In The Story

Costner co-wrote the ‘Horizon’ franchise with Jon Baird and said he couldn’t imagine a scene without a woman while creating the script.

The actor/director explained why the female perspective was so important for the story on ‘The Kelly Clarkson Show’ earlier this month:

“This has a tremendous amount of women in it. They play such a big part of the West and what happened. They were often taken out there against their will and with their children on the idea that there was something great out there. There was nothing out there except a group of people who lived there for thousands of years. Women were dragged into the most terrible of circumstances and made it work. And somehow, they don’t find themselves in Westerns and in ‘Horizon’ they dominate.”

The Franchise Is Still In The Works

Kevin Costner also joined the cast of ‘Horizon: An American Saga’ opposite Sienna Miller, Jena Malone, Isabelle Fuhrman, Abbey Lee, and Ella Hunt.

The ‘Horizon’ franchise’s first film came out on June 28 with Chapter 2 set to hit the screen on August 16. Release dates for Chapter 3 and 4 are yet to be announced as the production still continues.
