Kevin Costner Recalls Being On Morphine On Set: ‘I Wanted To Cry’

The actor reflects on filming ‘Hidden Figures’ under morphine influence.

Kevin Costner played Al Harrison in 2016’s ‘Hidden Figures’ about the true story of three Black women’s contributions to the 1960s Space Race. According to a new cover story for People, he was ill for most of the shooting:

“I’ve never worked drunk on a set. I’ve never worked high on a set, but I was on morphine the last two weeks that I worked on [‘Hidden Figures’].”

He Wanted To Cry On Set

Costner got kidney stones during the production but didn’t take any time off. He recalled:

“I worked 10 days under an IV drip. I don’t even know how. About three days of it I was normal and then something happened to me. I never missed a day of work. I stayed in my trailer with a morphine drip in my arm.”

The actor needed to keep his sleeves rolled down on camera to hide the IV bruises. He described it as a painful experience and shared:

“I wanted to cry, but there was everybody watching, so I didn’t.”

Costner’s New Project

Costner still says working on ‘Hidden Figures’ was ‘magic’ as he teamed with ‘Black or White’ co-star Octavia Spencer and director Theodore Melfi.

Now, the actor is working with the likes of Sienna Miller and Abbey Lee for ‘Horizon: An American Saga.’ The four-chapter franchise focuses on life after the Civil War and delves into the female perspective of the events. Costner’s words about the premise read:

“I make movies for men. That’s what I do. But I won’t make a movie unless I have strong women characters. That’s how I’ve conducted my career. I think that’s why I have a good following. I thank you, women, for dragging your men here. It was a Western after all. I just can’t conceive of a movie without having [strong women].”

‘Horizon’ Chapter 1 is already out in theaters. Chapter 2 is set for release on August 16 while the final films are still in development.
