Giancarlo Esposito played many villains on screen, from Gus Fring in ‘Breaking Bad’ to Stan Edgar in ‘The Boys.’ He shared the best part of taking on these roles during a chat with The Hollywood Reporter at the San Diego Comic-Con 2024 red carpet:
“The best part is to be able to think about the villain’s history and why he came to be; to be able to pepper that villain with a complication that says he’s human somewhere inside; to allow the audience a chance to see that maybe they’ll catch a glimpse of that humanity, maybe they won’t. And so, to have people love and hate me at the same time is the true essence of what I love to do.”
He explained:
“Because if you see a glimpse of the humanity that is who I like to complicate my characters with, then you see a mirror for yourself, and you see the goodness and the badness on a good day or a bad day that you may experience.”
Sidewinder Is A Different Type, He Says
Esposito attended the Comic-Con to introduce his role as Seth Voelker/Sidewinder in the upcoming ‘Captain America: Brave New World.’ He said of the Serpent Society leader:
“This guy is different. This guy is brutal. This guy is non-stop. He gets what he needs. He knows how to use the tools of the trade, and he knows how to use them well. He knows when it’s time to exit the room, and he knows when it’s time to come back and grab you.”
He added:
“So, there’s so much more to this character that I’ve been so very grateful to be given the opportunity to play. That’s different from anything I’ve done. It’s going to be a bang-up success.”
Esposito announced joining ‘Brave New World’ a couple of months ago and teased that his character would also get a TV series of its own. As of now, there’s no word on the show, but filming for the ‘Captain America’ sequel wrapped up in late June, and it is now waiting for release on February 14, 2025.
