According to the franchise’s screenwriter, a new ‘Lord of the Rings’ movie could be on its way.
There may be a second film in the works after ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum.’ The title for this second movie hasn’t been confirmed yet.
Philippa Boyens cleared up some confusion in an interview with Empire. She explained that ‘The Hunt for Gollum’ isn’t split into two parts as some believed. “I can tell you definitively it isn’t two films! That was a genuine misunderstanding that happened because we’ve begun to work, conceptually, on two different live-action films. The first being ‘The Hunt For Gollum,’ the second one still to be confirmed,” she said.
The confusion arose because the team is working on two different concepts at the same time.
The original LOTR trilogy brought in over $2.9 billion at the global box office. The ‘Hobbit’ trilogy followed and made another $2.9 billion. Both trilogies were directed by Peter Jackson.
Warner Bros. Discovery confirmed back in May 2024 that ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum’ is already in the works. Andy Serkis will reprise his role as Gollum and direct the movie.
Sir Ian McKellen’s return as Gandalf hasn’t been confirmed yet. Orlando Bloom is interested in coming back, even if it means using AI technology. Hugo Weaving, who played Elrond, said he does not plan to return. Andy Serkis is the only confirmed cast member so far.
No release date has been announced yet for ‘The Hunt for Gollum.’
