Vincent D’Onofrio Shares Concerning Update On Kingpin’s Future Due To Marvel Vs. Sony Dispute

Whether Kingpin will appear in Marvel’s upcoming ‘Spider-Man’ animated show is unclear due to the conflict over copyrights.

Marvel’s ‘Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man’ will come out later this year and include Charlie Cox as Daredevil. But Vincent D’Onofrio will not join his ‘Daredevil’ and ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ co-star in the cast.

D’Onofrio recently explained his absence at Fan Expo Boston 2024. When asked if he would voice Kingpin in the upcoming animated series, he said:

“I’m going to transparently say this: You know the whole Marvel-Sony thing, right? So, there are characters — Marvel characters invented by Marvel, written by Marvel — that are caught in between Marvel and Sony. And so it takes a long time for them to figure out who is doing what.”

The actor added:

“I just never really know where [Kingpin can show up]. My character is in that kind of situation, unlike Charlie’s. So, I don’t know, it’s part of the deal when it comes to playing Kingpin.”

Kingpin’s Place In Sony And Marvel Projects

Sony Pictures has held the license to Spider-Man and, reportedly, over 900 related characters since 1999. Kingpin apparently remained as a co-owned property in the deal.

Wilson Fisk appeared regularly on Marvel Films Animation’s ‘Spider-Man: The Animated Series’ in the ‘90s. He was also the main villain in Fox’s ‘Daredevil’ in 2003.

Michael Clarke Duncan played Kingpin in the film and later voiced the character on Sony Pictures Television’s ‘Spider-Man: The New Animated Series.’ This was his last appearance on an animated TV show.

The Spider-Man and Daredevil villain appeared in more Sony and Marvel projects separately in the following years. These included ‘The Spectacular Spider-Man,’ ‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse,’ and 2015’s ‘Daredevil.’

Vincent D’Onofrio reprised his role as Kingpin in recent MCU shows ‘Hawkeye’ and ‘Echo.’ Now, he’s set to appear in the Daredevil reboot, ‘Born Again,’ along with Charlie Cox, Ayelet Zurer, Deborah Ann Woll, and Elden Henson.

Marvel’s Upcoming Animated Show

As for ‘Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man,’ the show will reportedly come out this fall as an ‘MCU-adjacent’ project. The plot will follow an alternative to the MCU although it was first announced as a prequel to ‘Captain America: Civil War’ and Tom Holland’s MCU ‘Spider-Man’ films.

Marvel Studios’ head of streaming, television, and animation, Brad Winderbaum, told ComicBook about the upcoming animation in 2022:

“Because of things that happen in the multiverse — because of new, random occurrences — it’s not Tony Stark who’s waiting for him there [in Aunt May’s apartment]. It’s Norman Osborn, and that sends his life in an unexpected trajectory that collides him with many unexpected characters in the Marvel universe.”

The series will feature Hudson Thames as Peter Parker, with Kari Wahlgren as Aunt May and Grace Song as Nico Minoru. Other cast members will be Zeno Robinson as Harry Osborn, Eugene Byrd as Lonnie Lincoln, Hugh Dancy as Otto Octavius, and Charlie Cox as Matt Murdock/Daredevil.

The series will also introduce Doctor Strange and villains like Rhino, Speed Demon, and the Tarantula. More cast announcements are on the way.
