Jodie Comer On Losing ‘Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga’ Role To Anya Taylor-Joy

The director originally considered Comer for the lead role in ‘Furiosa.’

George Miller confirmed during the ‘Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga’ press tour that he had an ‘exploratory’ chat about playing a younger Furiosa with Jodie Comer. Comer lost the role to Anya Taylor-Joy but still appreciated the offer. She recently told The Hollywood Reporter:

“Of course [it was flattering]. Everyone admires his work. It is so bold and distinct, and I can’t wait to see the movie. But it is such a privilege when you get to speak with these directors in whatever capacity, even just to pick their brains or tell them that you admire their work or ask them certain questions. So, yeah, George Miller is definitely one of those people.”

The Film Received Good Reviews

Instead, the actress worked with ‘Mad Max: Fury Road’s Tom Hardy in 2023’s ‘The Bikeriders.’ Her co-star also shared positive thoughts about the prequel in an interview with Variety:

“I’m sure that ‘Furiosa’ will be a tremendous success, as rightly George, Anya, and Chris [Hemsworth] well deserve. I’m a huge ‘Mad Max’ fan, and ‘Fury Road’ fan and ‘Furiosa’ fan. I haven’t seen the film, but I know it’s bound to be special because it’s come from George.”

‘Furiosa’ came out last month and failed at the box office. It earned $160.1 million worldwide on a budget of $168 million despite getting good reviews.

Some Scenes Were Controversial

Some parts of the film received backlash on social media. Fans criticized a scene that showed Nathan Jones’ Rictus Erectus stroking young Furiosa’s (Alyla Browne) hair suggestively. Jones responded by writing on Facebook:

“I’ve noticed a few queries and private messages about my role in ‘Mad Max: Furiosa,’ particularly regarding a scene with young Furiosa. This is a very sensitive subject, and I want to emphasize that it involves a fictional character. The details can be uncomfortable, and as an actor, my job is to portray a character based on the direction and script provided to me. I appreciate your understanding and support in recognizing the distinction between fiction and reality. Thank you.”

Miller was planning another prequel called ‘The Wasteland’ following ‘Furiosa,’ but the plans may fall through due to the latter’s poor reception.
